What is the problem?
Among the most harmful pollutants affecting our environment and atmosphere are nitrogen oxides (NOx). These substances are not only key contributors to acid rain, but they also exacerbate various lung diseases, respiratory failure, and lung cancer. Alarmingly, more than 60% of the nitrogen oxides in the air we breathe originate from vehicle exhaust emissions. This concern has led to increasingly stringent regulations on diesel exhaust emissions across the World. Consequently, manufacturers of automobiles, agricultural machinery, ships, and other diesel-engine-powered equipment are continuously innovating. Their main focus? Optimizing fuel combustion processes and enhancing exhaust gas neutralization to reduce emissions
What is the SCR selective catalytic reduction system?
Selective Catalytic Reduction, or SCR, is a technology designed to specifically target and reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx), including NO and NO2, in exhaust gases. Here's how the process works:
An aqueous solution of urea, typically AUS32 AdBlue®, is introduced into the hot exhaust gas. Once the temperature exceeds 180°C, the solution undergoes hydrolysis, producing ammonia and carbon dioxide. In the presence of an SCR catalyst, such as vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), the ammonia reacts with the nitrogen oxides to create harmless byproducts: elemental nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O).
The neutralization process results in nitrogen, water, and CO2, which, despite its greenhouse effect, is relatively benign—it's the same gas we exhale.
SCR technology is both cost-effective and fuel-efficient. It can reduce NOx emissions by up to 90%, hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions by 50-90%, and particulate matter emissions by 30-50%.
Another benefit of SCR technology is its impact on fuel consumption. Many owners and drivers of SCR-equipped trucks report a 3-5% reduction in their vehicle's fuel consumption.
AdBlue, an essential component of the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, is crucial for neutralizing harmful emissions. Scientifically known as AUS 32 (Aqueous Urea Solution 32), it's a registered trademark owned by the German Association of the Automotive Industry, VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie E.V.).

AdBlue is a clear, colorless liquid with a slight scent of ammonia. It consists of 32.5% pure urea and 67.5% demineralized water. Its general physical and chemical characteristics include:
